The realization of a Sicilian puppet consists of different steps that require knowledge in the field of carpentry, painting, tailoring, and, above all, metalworking for the realization of the armor.
Among these different fields of craftsmanship, the Sicilian puppet builder expresses himself more in the working of metals for the construction of the armor, releasing his most genuine imagination.
This process involves different techniques in the Sicilian tradition such as: punching, chiselling, or embossing.
Among all, the master Salonia has specialized over the years on cantilever technique, by means of hammers and tools of various shapes, often conceived and made by himself, which allow him to create real works in high relief from a simple sheet of sheet metal. (without the use of molds)
To date, and since his first works, every single piece that makes up the armor of one of his puppets is created entirely by hand with the embossing technique.
Even the various models of the armor, the designs that enrich them, and the swords themselves, are designed and built entirely by the master Salonia.

The Story of Rinaldo and his sword Frusberta
Son of Duke Amone and Beatrice, daughter of Duke Namo.
Rinaldo had killed in a duel to the giant Atlas and by right he had taken possession of his sword Frusberta and his enchanted horse Bajardo.
In France, hard battles were fought against infidels with great success for the paladins of France. Rinaldo fought against the Saracens with such immense honor and value, that he aroused the attention of Charlemagne who wanted him by his side.
With the arrival of the beautiful Beatrice at the court of Paris, he went mad with love, but Rinaldo returned his great first love to Clarice.
Rinaldo fought with the Paladins of France until the battle in which his cousin Orlando lost his life,
For her valiant exploits she was offered the kingdom of Trabizond, which she refused, donned the robes of a monk and entered a convent where she remained until her death.
Gianfranco Salonia, born in 1966, has been passionate about the magical world of Sicilian puppets since he was a child, ever since his paternal uncle took him with him to attend the shows of Don Ignazio Puglisi, a wandering puppeteer based in Sortino.
The passion for Sicilian puppets remains interned in the master Salonia for a long time without finding a real manifestation until, around the end of the 90s, he joins the Sicilian puppet theater company “Antica Compagnai Opera dei Pupi Puglisi family ”Founded by Don Ignazio Puglisi’s nephew, Manlio Puglisi.
The master Salonia becomes part of the company with the specific task of builder, after having learned through some meetings with the master Pulvirenti of Aciplatani some of the basic techniques of the construction of Sicilian puppets.
In the early 2000s the master Salonia enters the scene with the first entirely embossed brass puppet “Erminio from the golden star”.
