Degas collection
Edgar Degas (Paris 1834 – Paris 1917)
One of the greatest French artists. Known as “the painter of dancers”,
he was also a sculptor and draftsman, a technique in which he excelled.
He is counted among the leading exponents of Impressionism.
Fourteen year old dancer
Degas participated in six of the seven exhibitions organized by the Impressionists: in one of these he exhibited his sculpture of Fourteen year old dancer (1880-1881), absolutely innovative for the time both for the choice of materials (bronze, wax, fabric and real hair) and for the portrait subject, a very thin girl.
Many critics branded the work as a “horror”. Today it is considered a masterpiece that gave rise to sculpture in the modern sense.
