Vase Ceramic Of Caltagirone ornament Artisan Antique Bùmmulu Sicilian
The Bummolo is a terracotta container used in Sicily to keep the water always fresh even during the summer.
The history and use of this majolica object called “BUMMULU MALANDRINO” in Sicilian dialect intrigues most of our customers.
It has very ancient origins. Examples have been found dating back to the 12th century. The tradition of this object comes during the Arab domination in Sicily and was used to pour water, oil or wine.
Structured at the bottom with a perforated cylindrical base, it is turned upside down to be filled.
The use of bummolo is based on a known behavior of liquids which pass into the gaseous state (evaporation) by absorbing heat. The material with which the bummolo is built is permeable and allows a certain amount of water to transpire continuously which, in contact with the warm air of the environment, turns into steam. The resulting heat absorption occurs near the surface of the container which then undergoes a sufficient temperature drop to keep the liquid always fresh, even when exposed to the sun.
Bummulu Malandrinu ceramic from Caltagirone hand-decorated in blue and white
Pitcher made and hand painted in blue and white.
Available in size: height 25 cm
As a jug, decorative vase, ornament, our ornament , ancient objects of the Sicilian tradition, today are furnishing accessories that adapt to any style of furniture

History of the holy water stoup
The holy water stoup, a sacred object that takes up the classic style of its origin in Sicily, is represented with new plastic and decorative styles in pure made in Italy style.
The widespread use of drawing holy water has given rise to bedside stoups designed to contain holy water at home, to be used during morning and evening prayers by all members of the family.
In Caltagirone, the oldest majolica stoups we know of are from the late sixteenth century. In the front part of the shrine it was customary to paint cherub heads or the cross, or some Marian symbol.
In the seventeenth century the patron saints of the places where they were produced were represented. The images, often formed by columns, archivolt, and tympanum, are in relief and almost always in a single color, in dark manganese. The basin, in the lower part, looks like a very protruding turned and shaped cup.
In the eighteenth century the holy water stoup reached its maximum artistic development, through modeled and painted elements in monochrome or bright polychrome. The most common devotional saints are the Virgin, St. Anthony of Padua, St. James the Greater, the Child Jesus, St. John of God, the face of Christ, St. Francis of Paola, the Guardian Angel. Since the late seventeenth century, when the brotherhood of the Immaculate Conception was founded in the Oratory of PP. Conventuals of San Francesco, in Caltagirone there is a strong devotional growth towards the Madonna, expressed also in the objects of common use produced by the craftsmanship of the cannatari, incorporated in the aforementioned brotherhood. Plates, quarters, fruit bowls and holy water fonts almost always show the image of the Madonna.
The popular holy water fonts of the late eighteenth century frequently resemble those rich and sumptuous baskets of sweet pastry, which are used to make at Easter celebrations for the delight of children.
