It fills from below and has no caps. The liquid can only come out of the special spout. Maintains the temperature of drinks, both cold and hot.
Measures: 18 x 20 x 12 cm
History of the Bummulu Malandrinu
The Bummulu is a terracotta container used in Sicily to keep the water always fresh even during the summer.
The history and use of this majolica object called “BUMMULU MALANDRINO” in Sicilian dialect intrigues most of our customers.
It has very ancient origins. Examples have been found dating back to the 12th century. The tradition of this object comes during the Arab domination in Sicily and was used to pour water, oil or wine.
Structured at the bottom with a perforated cylindrical base, it is turned upside down to be filled.
The use of bummulu is based on a known behavior of liquids which pass into a gaseous state (evaporation) by absorbing heat. The material with which the bummulu is made is permeable and allows a certain amount of water to transpire continuously which, in contact with the warm air of the environment, turns into steam. The resulting heat absorption occurs near the surface of the container which then undergoes a sufficient temperature drop to keep the liquid always fresh, even when exposed to the sun.
In our shop you will also find other models and sizes of bummulu and many other ceramic items.
Product delivered with guarantee certificate, signed and stamped.

The story of the beautiful Sicilian girl and the legend of Moor’s head
It is said that in Palermo, around the year 1100 (period of the domination of the Moors in Sicily at the Kalsa), a beautiful girl lived in a palace who loved to spend her days taking care of the flowers and plants on her balcony.
One day, passing through the Kalsa, a young dark-haired man saw the beautiful girl, intent on taking care of the plants, he fell in love with her, he decided to want her for himself, without delay he entered the girl’s house and declared his love for her. One day, passing through the Kalsa, a young dark-haired man saw the beautiful girl, intent on taking care of the plants, he fell in love with her, he decided to want her for himself, without delay he entered the girl’s house and declared his love for her. The girl, struck by so much feeling, returned the young man’s love, but when she learned that the Moor would leave her to return to his lands in the East, where a wife with children was waiting for her, she waited for the darkness and as soon as it fell asleep killed him, cut off his head, made a Vase of it where he planted some basil and put it on display outside on the balcony.

An ingenious container.
It fills from below and has no caps. The liquid can only come out of the special spout. Maintains the temperature of drinks, both cold and hot.
Measurements: 25 x 25 x 15 cm
