History of Venetian masks
Venice is the city of masks: the beautiful ones Venetian masks they are famous all over the world; they were worn by the Venetians on various occasions and not only at Carnival when they found their maximum moment of show. The mask was worn by men to avoid being recognized in the most uncomfortable situations and by women, as well as to hide their identity, even for beauty.
Venice was the seat of mask production since the Middle Ages. These accessories became precociously independent from its scenic functions, from theater to Carnival, to take on a singular aesthetic value.
Since the sixteenth century, Venice seems to transfer in the mask in general, not in a particular mask, a complex of symbols and cultural behaviors that are in fact indissoluble from the image of the city such as the gondola or the winged lion.
